New Sculpture in Progress

I am working on a new sculpture that I will be looking to sell if I can figure out how to ship the thing once it is finished.

It is my largest work so far and will measure an estimated 20″ tall by 12″ deep by probably 24″ wide when finished. It will also be exceptionally delicate, so shipping would be a major concern. I have already decided that it will have to be built in sections that would be assembled by the end buyer.

What is it you ask? A pair of nesting wyverns. I have the basic structure of them both already made, as well as the eggs which are made from real chicken eggs that I emptied, cleaned thoroughly and painted. The eggs are what dictated the size of the rest of the sculpture, which is to be made entirely of polymer clay with a metal armature to stabilize the overall figure.

Right now the female is just a basic armature, the male has the first layers of polymer clay on it and has began to be scaled starting at the end of the tail. I am about halfway up along the tail, so I have a long way to go before the male is finished. I have not even started on wing design for the pair.

I am working on painting a dragon themed book cover for a hand bound book that I am creating. I don’t know why I haven’t done this before, combine my painting and bookbinding into one artform, but I am loving working on it now that I have combined them and look forward to making a lot more of these truly one of a kind work of art books.

Monitor Dragon

This is not to be confused with a monitor lizard, rather it is my latest project – a monitor dragon. I’m working on him off and on just as a little bit of diversion and a way to keep my hands from getting cramped up when I am writing all day. I’ll hopefully get some pictures of him up soon so you all can see what he looks like. For now, he’s a little green fellow that is to sit on the top of my flatscreen monitor and watch what I am writing.

It’s good to be back to working with the clay again!

I pick up my fair entry today – and his ribbon and rosette!

Hehehe… that wyvern that I built and entered in the Alaska State Fair, he won the first premium blue ribbon and the division champion rosette!

I get to go over and pick him up today, then I want to build him a nice lit shadowbox when I build the shelves in my bedroom. Display him and his little treasures.

Wyvern I entered in the Alaska State Fair

I created a wyvern from polymer clay and entered him in the Arts and Crafts polymer clay division at the Alaska State Fair this past Saturday. The fair starts in about a week week and a half, but the entries were all due in by last Saturday.

This is the little fellow, I apologize for the poor picture quality, but I lost my good camera so just have my old (over 10 years) Polaroid to take pictures with.

Each of the scales and belly plates was individually cit from polymer slay and applied to the wyvern one at a time. It took forever to get all those tiny scales made and in place, but I think it made for a much better looking piece than I could have achieved if I had used a tool to press the scales pattern into the wyvern.

The wings are iridescent gold-green cloth that I got from the fabric store. I had to pay $15 a yard for the inner cloth and $6 a yard for the backing cloth, so I just got a 1/4 of a yard on each one and still have plenty to make more dragons with.
